Magpie's Director

Dr Ian Faulconbridge

Ian has over 30 years of direct experience in the engineering and management of complex, technical projects. His experience spans both public and private sectors, and a range of different industries, both in Australia and overseas. He has worked in all phases of the system lifecycle, ranging from strategic acquisitions through to sustainment and disposal of complex systems.

His consultancies tend to specialise in the early stages of the system lifecycle, working with stakeholders during the acquisition phase to: articulate business needs and requirements; define and specify the required capability; and develop realistic and workable technical plans, strategies and business cases to solve customers' problems. Ian has an interest in helping organisations to develop and grow their own systems engineering capabilities, people and processes in order to enable them to deal with complexity into the future. He uses an established systems engineering framework when performing capability assessments to help organisations identify where to focus their process improvement efforts.

In addition to consulting, Ian holds adjunct positions at a number of Australian universities and he teaches Magpie's tailored, in-house courses and workshops to clients in Australia and overseas. He has extensive teaching experience having taught project management, systems engineering, and an array of technical subjects at a number of Australian universities at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional development levels.

Ian’s formal qualifications include a Doctorate, a Masters and a Bachelors degree (all in Engineering); and an MBA in Project Management. He has recently completed a Master of Environmental Management to inform an emerging interest in how systems engineering concepts may be applied to environmental projects and problems.

His professional memberships and associations include:
  • Fellow of Engineers Australia (FIEAust)
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng)
  • Engineering Executive (EngExec)
  • National Engineering Register (NER)
  • Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ)
  • Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (SMIEEE)
  • Member of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE)

He is the author or co-author of a number of books covering radar technology, avionics systems, systems engineering and project management. Part of his doctoral dissertation has been published in a book that focuses on technical education.
